The Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, which has passed the House and is now in the Senate, would require all voters to provide proof of U.S. citizenship when registering or updating their registration—posing barriers for many, especially women who’ve changed their names after marriage and low-income individuals. Though aimed at preventing voter fraud, such fraud is extremely rare, and the bill could disproportionately affect millions who lack easy access to required documents.
