Pennsylvania House Advances Fairness Act, Expanding LGBTQ+ Protections

A significant step toward advancing equity in Pennsylvania was taken this week as the Pennsylvania House passed legislation that would expand protections for LGBTQ+ individuals across the Commonwealth.

The Fairness Act would update Pennsylvania’s Human Relations Act to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity or expression. If enacted, it would make it unlawful to deny individuals access to housing, employment, or public accommodations because of their sex, gender identity, or sexual orientation.

Supporters of the legislation emphasize that these protections are long overdue. While federal rulings have addressed discrimination in employment, gaps remain at the state level - particularly in housing and public accommodations - leaving many LGBTQ+ individuals vulnerable to inequitable treatment.

The bill passed the House by a narrow margin, reflecting both the progress made and the ongoing  work that needs to be done surrounding LGBTQ+ protections in Pennsylvania.
