What are the
Midterm Elections?

Every four years, Americans vote in an election that takes place halfway through a president’s four-year term. These are called “midterm elections” because they happen in the middle of the president’s time in office.  â€‹

What is on the ballot?

  • Federal Level - Congress

  • Every seat in the U.S. House of Representatives — all 435 members are up for election.

  • About one-third of the U.S. Senate — senators serve six-year terms, so only some Senate seats are on the ballot every two years.

    • PA does NOT have a senator up for election in 2026.

  • State Level – Governor and the General Assembly

    • Governor

  • State Senator

  • State Representative

Why is this so important?

  • Because the people you elect make decisions that affect your everyday life.

  • Members of Congress decide how federal dollars are spent and vote on issues ranging from health care and education to jobs, taxes, immigration, reproductive rights, and the environment. State and local officials make decisions that can be even closer to home — including decisions about schools, public safety, transportation, housing, and community services.
