The Fund for Women and Girls Announces 2024 Kitchen Table Award Winner

WEST CHESTER, PA (March 8, 2024) – On this International Women’s Day, a day of global celebration of women’s achievements and advocating for gender equality, The Fund for Women and Girls is proud to announce the 13th recipient of the Kitchen Table Award, Daicy Cañas. Daicy will accept the award at the 19th Annual Making a Difference Luncheon on May 3, 2024, at The Desmond Hotel in Malvern.

The Fund established the Kitchen Table Award in 2011 to honor a Chester County woman who has made substantive contributions through service and/or philanthropy to improve the lives of women and girls through her own time, talent, or resources. It is named in celebration of the genesis of The Fund in 1996: the many conversations held around the kitchen, board, and coffee tables about what could be done to address the needs of local women and girls.

Daicy Cañas embodies individuals who exemplify the spirit of inclusivity and empowerment within their communities.

Daicy’s journey from Guanajuato, Mexico, to Pennsylvania at the age of 10 has been marked by resilience, compassion, and a deep commitment to giving back. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology from West Chester University, Daicy felt a strong calling to support her community, having experienced firsthand the challenges of navigating a new country.

Driven by her passion for empowering young women, Daicy joined YoungMoms, an organization dedicated to providing support, resources, and skills to pregnant and parenting young women in Kennett Square. Over the course of seven years, the last four as Program Director, Daicy worked tirelessly to ensure that every young mom received the assistance they needed to overcome obstacles and build a better future for themselves and their families.

Under Daicy’s leadership, YoungMoms flourished, becoming a beacon of hope and opportunity for countless young women in the community. Her dedication and commitment have transformed the lives of many, inspiring them to pursue their dreams and achieve their goals.

Reflecting on her time at YoungMoms, Daicy shares, “It is very rewarding to see so many of our young moms graduate school, accomplish their goals, and continue to keep in touch with us years after they have graduated from Young Moms.”

Executive Director of YoungMoms and nominator, Mary Hewes on her contributions, “Daicy has spent years advocating for those who are living in our community but struggling to have their basic needs met. Her clients, who can be as young as 14, are struggling to navigate the already complicated teen years while being pregnant or parenting a child of their own. She has compassion, cultivates hope for those who may feel hopeless, builds community for those who feel alone and creates wellness for our clients.”

Daicy’s unwavering dedication to improve the lives of women and girls in Chester County embodies the spirit of the Kitchen Table Award. Her tireless efforts have made a lasting impact on the lives of countless individuals, exemplifying the ethos of International Women’s Day and the mission of The Fund for Women and Girls.

Please join us in congratulating Daicy Cañas for this well-deserved honor and in celebrating her remarkable contributions to the community.
